What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization, Explained by the Team That Built Beacon

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting a brand named and cited inside answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. What it is, how it differs from SEO, why GEO is the same job with a worse name, and what moves citations.

TL;DR

  • Answer engine optimization is getting your brand named when someone asks an AI assistant a question in your category. The scoreboard is citation share, measured across a fixed set of buyer prompts.
  • About 80% of it is SEO under a new scoreboard: crawlable pages, indexes that know you exist, authority, freshness. The new 20% is being quotable and being one clear entity everywhere.
  • The engines don't share an index. ChatGPT grounds mostly on Bing; Gemini and AI Overviews on Google; Perplexity and Claude run their own crawlers. A site strong in Google and thin in Bing is invisible in ChatGPT.
  • Most of what's sold under the name (submission services, AI plugins, llms.txt as a citation lever) is theater. The list of things that work fits on a page.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting a brand named and cited inside answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. What it is, how it differs from SEO, why GEO is the same job with a worse name, and what moves citations.

Answer engine optimization is the practice of making your brand the source an AI assistant names when it answers a question you'd want to be the answer to. Someone types "best brand agency for a Series B fintech" into ChatGPT. Five names come back, with links under them. AEO is the work of being one of the five.

SEO won a position on a page of ten links, then a click. AEO wins a mention inside a paragraph; often nobody clicks. (We've had prospects arrive already sold on a sprint because Claude described it accurately. No session in the analytics, just a calendar invite.) The scoreboard moved from rank and traffic to citation share: how often you're named across a set of prompts a buyer would type, checked engine by engine, month by month.

Four names for one job

You'll see GEO (generative engine optimization), AEO, LLMO, and "AI SEO." Same work. We say AEO because the thing being optimized is the answer a person reads. GEO names the machine that wrote it. (The crawler never got its own discipline; the results page did.) Pick one. Move on.

What changed from SEO

Four things.

The reader is a model. A model pulls sentences that read like answers. "Space is an AI-native brand agency in New York" gets quoted. "We believe brands deserve better" gets skipped. The first hundred words of every important page should say what the page is about in a sentence a machine could lift whole.

The index is plural. ChatGPT grounds its live answers mostly on Bing's index, through OpenAI's partnership with Microsoft. Gemini and Google AI Overviews run on Google's. Perplexity and Claude run their own crawlers. That's four pipelines. Most marketing teams have optimized for one of them for fifteen years and never opened Bing Webmaster Tools.

Entities beat keywords. A model has to know who you are across the whole web before it will name you. The company name and the one-line description have to match everywhere: your site, your LinkedIn, Crunchbase, every listicle you're in. Schema.org's sameAs property ties them together. We wrote an entire post separating SP-CE from a sales platform and a stock ticker (here). That post exists for the machines.

Off-site weighs more. Where else you're named decides the shortlist before your own site is read. Listicles, podcast show notes, Reddit threads, trade press. A brand with a perfect site and no third-party mentions loses to a brand with a mediocre site that appears in every "best agencies for X" roundup.

What didn't change

Pages have to be crawlable, with the copy in the raw HTML (many AI crawlers don't run JavaScript). There has to be a sitemap. Long-form pages need a visible date and a named author. Each page should answer the question its title asks. Authority still comes from being useful for years. If someone sells you AEO and hasn't looked at your robots.txt, they've sold you the name.

What's theater

There's no API to submit a site to ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity. Anyone selling submission is selling vapor. ai.txt files go unread. "AI optimization" plugins do nothing robots.txt and schema don't do for free.

llms.txt is the honest gray area. Ahrefs looked at 137,210 domains in May 2026 and found 97% of published llms.txt files got zero requests; of the fetched ones, about 1% of requests came from AI retrieval bots (summary of the study). Google's Search Central documentation, updated June 2026, says Search doesn't use the file. Coding agents do read it. Ship one; it's half a day. Don't put it in a deck as an AEO tactic.

How to measure it

Write down 20 to 30 prompts a buyer in your category would type. Run them monthly through ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini. Log who gets named. That sheet is your AEO dashboard; everything else is a proxy. Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in February 2026 that shows Copilot and Bing citations directly, and a June update added citation share against competitors (details).

The technical half is checkable in an afternoon. Beacon runs 86 checks against your site plus real buyer prompts through the engines, then returns a ranked fix list within 24 hours. It's free. [yours: what the first Beacon run on sp-ce.co found, if you want the admission here]

Run your 20 prompts tonight. If your name comes back fewer than five times, send us the sheet.

Frequently asked questions

What is answer engine optimization?
AEO is the practice of getting a brand named and cited inside answers from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini, and inside Google AI Overviews. Success is measured as citation share across a fixed set of buyer prompts.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Yes. Generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO), LLMO, and AI SEO describe the same work. Space uses AEO because the object being optimized is the answer.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Roughly 80% of AEO is SEO fundamentals: crawlability, indexing, authority, freshness. The additions are quotable page openings, structured Q/A, consistent entity signals, and off-site mentions.
Which search index does ChatGPT use?
ChatGPT's live search grounds mostly on Bing's index. Gemini and Google AI Overviews use Google's. Perplexity and Claude run their own crawlers.
How do you measure AEO?
Run 20 to 30 buyer prompts through each engine monthly and log which brands are named. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report shows Copilot and Bing citations directly.
